SACRED VALLEY TREK ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO - CHINCHERO - MORAY - MARAS - OLLANTAYTAMBO - AGUAS CALIENTES

At 7am pick up from the hotel and travel with tour guide by private van Chincheros, this transfer takes 50 minutes approximately, from the top you will see spectacular panoramic view of Vilcanota Mountain range.
First we drive to Chincheros through nice countryside, visit the archaeological site, which display a great mixture of both Inca and Colonial buildings style. Continue descending driving to Moray, this a colonial town located in middle of nature, from here we started our trekking in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The trek will be through green hills and viewing amazing landscape of the mountain in the other side of Urubamba River.
Arrive to Moray agricultural laboratory, the tour guide will takes you into these circular terraces and explain their function, which were built by the Incas, were used as a seed-producing area for the principal crops of the empire, like potato and maize.
Continue hiking through variety of crops grown by the local farmers we will arrive to a nice viewpoint, from where we have wonderful panoramic view of Urubamba and Ollantaytambo canyon. Lunch will be served in middle of nature, our cook will prepare our country lunch.
Two more hours hiking on the trail used by locals arrive to Maras Salineras, we spend some time on the salt pans, our guide will explain you  how is the process to work the salt, who they transport the salt from the mine to Maras.
After visit this amazing salt pans continue descending to the bottom of the Sacred Valley, along the way down we need to be ready to appreciate some Andean birds such as hummingbirds, falcons and other type of birds.
After 5 or 6 hours and around 17km of nice trekking arrive to Urubamba River and then we cross this river through hanging bridge. On the other side of the river will be waiting the van to pick up and drop us to Ollantaytambo train station.
Around 4pm aboard the train to Aguas Calientes, the bottom town of Machu Picchu. If time permit OPTIONAL visit the thermal baths located next of town. Overnight in a comfortable hotel with private bathroom and hot shower (L – D).

DAY 2: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

1st OPTION
At 4:30am breakfast and begin of 2 hours climb to Machu Picchu archaeological site (2500m).
2nd OPTION
At 6am breakfast and half hour later aboard the first tourist bus to drop us to Machu Picchu main door, and to be the first visitors inside Machu Picchu archaeological site you will have complete guided tour of this spectacular and mystical place. The guided tour include walk through the different section such as urban, agriculture, and the religions zone was used by the Inca Culture. According withthe time and your feeling you can coordinating with the tour guide climb to Huayna Picchu (Young Mountain) this climbing take around 1 hour to get the summit from where you can have the best view for photos of all Machu Picchu and of deep green canyon surrounding the sacred Inca City. At according time descend to Machu Picchu and then free time to explorer on your own. At mentioned time aboard a tourist bus to descend to Aguas Calientes town. Lunch will be in town and then we will aboard the backpacker train to Ollantaytambo (Sacred Valley) and from here we take a private van to drop us to the hotel in Cusco (B - L).

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING/CARRY

  1. Backpack 45Lt (Day bacpkack)
  2. Rain jacket or poncho (December - April)

  4. One complete change of clothing (you can afford to carry more changes of clothing if you hire a personal porters, see options below)

PORTERS to carry up to 12Kg = $120 USD ($30 USD per day) for the full duration of the tour from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. Regarding porters who carry personal items. You will need to carry with you a daypack with your Camera, bottle of water, snacks, a fleece or something warm and a poncho in case of rain (unlikely in Dry season but as a precaution) and anything you will need before lunch as porters do not walk alongside you. Your bag will be waiting for you in your tent at campsites.
Best to put everything up to 12kgs in one backpack for the porter so that you don´t have 2 large backpacks in your tent. We can provide you with a big rice sack that is not heavy but also not water proof so use plastic bags around your gear. The porters have large ponchos to cover them and the bag.
Please note there are fines if you give an excess of 9 or 12 kgs so try to underpack rather than overpack or pay for an extra 9kgs.

TOURIST TICKET CUSCO

Officially known as the Boleto Turistico Unico (BTU) this ticket is valid for 10 days. It is sold at the Instituto Nacional de Cultura (INC). The ticket allows you entry to the following sites:
