The archaeological site of Tambo Colorado is located about 45km away from Pisco on the right bank of the valley river of Pisco, near the town of Humay, in the province of Pisco in Ica department. Tambo Colorado (490M) was an Inca settlement (1450 AD). Tambo Colorado was named for the red paint that once completely covered its adobe walls. Tambo Colorado is one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Peru; its buildings are typical Wary (Ayacucho) and Inca (Cusco) culture influences. Tambo Colorado is also known in Quechua as Pukallaqta (Red town), have buildings of ceremonial plazas, houses, ceremonial platforms, and the main building known as La Fortaleza. Tambo Colorado is served by roads connecting the Andes with the coast and from the southern valleys to the northern valleys. Some archaeologists and historians point out that Tambo Colorado was an administrative / ceremonial and military place to control the valley of Pisco also this place was to service as resting place for the Inca and his army across the Inca territory.
