HORSEBACK RIDING IN THE COLCA CANYON

The Best Way To Contact Andean People In 3 Days

Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1: AREQUIPA - CHIVAY - COLCA CANYON

At 7AM we start our tour to the second deepest canyon in the world, driving on the left side of Chachani mountain (6070M), continuing up to 4400m over the sea level — the Natural Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, natural habitat for Vicuñas, Llamas, Alpacas, with small lagoons (Bofedales), highland views (Patapampa 4850M), snowcaps and volcanoes, with photo stops along the way.

At 12PM we arrive to Chivay town at 3600M, where you have lunch and then meet the horses you'll be riding. We learn to communicate with our mounts through horsemanship techniques similar to those used by the famous horse whisperer, and practice handling them. In the afternoon we travel to the hot spring of LA CALERA, and in the evening visit the Maria Reiche Planetarium to enjoy the performance "Colca deep Canyon, deep sky" — learning how the ancient inhabitants of the Andes interpreted the night sky. Dinner is served with live Andean music. Overnight in Chivay or Yanque village (to be confirmed at booking time).

DAY 2: CHIVAY - YANQUE - ICHUPAMPA - PINCHOLLO

At 7AM is the breakfast at the hotel and travel to Yanque village, from where we will star to ride our horses, this day you will go on a longer ride through the Colca valley with our friendly horseman, you will see spectacular pre-Inca terraces along the Colca river, colony churches, pre Incas ruins, Ichupampa and Lari village, they are typical villages on the left bank of the river and the trail is mostly even.

At 12PM after four hours of riding arrive to Lari, where we will have lunch and continue riding between the terraces, going down to the bottom of the Colca River and crossing to right side of the Canyon and then we uphill to Pinchollo village (3400M) where will stay in a basic accommodation, but surrounded by great mountain view like Mismi, Hualca Hualca and Bomboya.

The camping option also includes 4 season tents, mattresses, sleeping bags (-5ºC), dining tent, table and camp chairs. PERU ADVENTURE TOURS guides recommend doing camping under starry sky (B - L - D).

DAY 3: PINCHOLLO - CONDOR CROSS LOOKOUT - CHIVAY - AREQUIPA

At 7AM after breakfast we go riding the horses for 2 hours to the famous Condor Cross (3600M), at this place is possible to appreciate the fly of Condors or sometimes seating on the big rocks, two hours spending looking this amusing and biggest flying bird in the world, also is possible to seeing many villages at the deep part of this spectacular Canyon.

At 10AM Is time to say "Thanks for everything and hasta la vista amigo" to the horses and to our horseman, We drive to Chivay, stopping on the way back, getting nice views from the river and Colca valley, colony churches, handicraft markets, green villages in the canyon and local's people working the ancient's pre-Incas terraces.
