There are several archeological sites both within and around the city (locally known as "huaca"). Some of them are the Administrative and Religious Center named "ÑAUPALLAQTA" or Sacred Town known today as HUACA PUCLLANA built during the IV Century, this archaeological site is located in the heart of the modern district of Miraflores.

COLONIAL LIMA

During the colonial time Lima was with Mexico City, the seat of the Spanish rule during 300 years, it was home to 40 viceroys during the colonial era. The central square (Plaza de Armas) was laid out by Pizarro himself, with the cathedral on one side, the Cabildo (town hall) on another side and Pizarro's own house on another. Pizarro lived in what is now known as the presidential palace until his death in 1541; he was hacked down in the street by rival conquistadores. His remains are in the cathedral. After Pizarro, Lima continued to be very important historically.
In 1746, after devastating earthquake the city was rebuilt, although a great deal of historic architecture was lost, as wonderful cathedral, churches, colonial houses, Moorish balconies, cloisters and religious architecture and monasteries in the historic center of Lima.

MODERN LIMA

Today Lima is the most cosmopolitan city in the middle of Peru's desert coastline, Lima is an economic magnet for struggling highland and Amazonian villagers. But it also snares the adventurous travelers with its top-class museums, vibrant nightlife and music scene, striking architecture, richly historical neighborhoods and genuinely friendly people.
Modern Lima is a mix of architectural styles and beautiful gardens; especially Miraflores with its parks and avenues that join to the beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean Coast from Larco Mar one of the most important commercial centers of the city. San Isidro, Olive grove brought from Spain time contrast with the modern architecture of houses and buildings, also offer excellent shops, art galleries and restaurants. Barranco, home to Lima's best known artists and writers, is filled with bars and night clubs.
Lima is also the best place to try the wonderful Peruvian cuisine, which has a huge variety of ingredients from coast, mountain and Amazon regions. The cold sea current in front of Peru's large coast makes the sea very rich in fish and seafood, which have a great taste due to the special plankton they eat. Fish and seafood restaurants are therefore the best, and not expensive.
