Downhill And Cross-Country Bike Tour Through The Wonders Of Andes

Colca Canyon Biking for all mountain biking lovers, Peru has one of the largest networks of Inca remains and following the innumerable trails that connect with the most amazing sites in the Cusco, Puno, Nasca, Lima, Arequipa, Paracas, passing through remote villages out of the reach of motorized vehicles, and having the chance to get know local Andean communities and learn their amazing life style. Mountain Biking is a relatively new sport in Peru, but new routes are rapidly being opened up, many of which offer excellent opportunities to ride.

For the more adventurous people, we arrange long biking trips. We are best undertaken and an experienced tour operator providing professional guides and bicycle equipment as well as the necessary supporting 4WD vehicles.

We have cycle trips from 1 up to more days designed to get the most out of your holiday. Beginning in the high Andes and descending into the Amazon jungle, we cycle from altitudes of 5000M to 600M. Biking on the single tracks, dirt roads, humid lands, frigid and warm climates, camping or spending in the local's family houses.

Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1: AREQUIPA - RESERVA NACIONAL DE AGUADA BLANCA Y SALINAS - VENTANAS DEL COLCA - SIBAYO - TUTI CHIVAY (195KM)

At 7AM we pick-up from your hotel and 4 hours of travel by private transport, this travel takes between the Misti and Chachani volcanoes up to 4850M where will see Llamas, Alpacas, Andean birds also will appreciate the Vicuñas, this animals living are protected by the national reserve of Aguada Blanca and Salinas (Pampas Cañahuas 4450M) - From the national reserve will be great view of backside of volcan Misti, nevado Chachani and many groups of typical fauna as Vicuñas, Alpacas, Llamas, andean birds, wet lands, little river and lagoons.

After 3 hours driving we take a dirt-road and old road to upper section of the canyon as known as ventanas del Colca (4400M) - Around 11AM arrive to the highest point of this first day, safety talking, check the bikes and wear the equipments and then start our bike trip with amazing landscape passing small canyons, mountains, little villages until the colonial town of Callalli where is a well recognized place named "Los Castillos Del Colca", this a natural geological formation show us huge lava walls with castle shape on the left side of the river.

After 2hrs biking we cross the Colca River on the upper zone of Colca valley - Short stop to have box lunch and drinks - Then we continue cycling on the right side of the valley on asphalt road (XC style) for about 3hrs to through Sibayo, Tuti, Canocota and finally we arrive to hot spring of Chivay to enjoy the thermal pools for about 2hrs and late afternoon transfer to hotel located in Chivay - Free evening for personal activities.

AVERAGE BIKING TRIP & DISTANCE: 65KM +- - Downhill and Cross-Country Style on dirt/asphalt road.

DAY 2: COLCA CANYON - CRUZ DEL CONDOR VIEWPOINT - HUAMBO TOWN - EL PEDREGAL - AREQUIPA (162KM)

At 6AM after packing everything will be the breakfast offered by the hotel and then private transfer for about 2hrs on the left bank of Colca canyon we will arrive to the Mirador Cruz Del Condor (8AM), and stop for about 2 hours to see the condor's flights, good timing for nice pictures of the small villages in the deepest part of the deepest second canyon in the world - Around 9:30AM we drive for about one hours through Cabanaconde with nice view of the landscape up to the first pass (4200M) - At the top we take our bike and enjoy a nice downhill through cactus forest - The riding will be easy on good road with lot view of great deep section fo the canyon.

Around 11AM arrive to the town of Huambo (3000M) to have early lunch and them we will see the quiet countryside and friendly farmers living from the agriculture - Continue with the tour with our private transportation we will reach the highest point (4400M) as known as "Mirador de Ampato", watch the impressive activity of Volcan Sabancaya, nevado Ampato (6380M), where was founded "Juanita Mummy" was founded in 1995 (Ice maiden princess) - Then we will visit the small dry lagoon on the right of the road is the natural home of Vicuñas and other wildlife - Continue driving we pass small Andean forest of Qeñuas and volcanic land of Qerqe plain where are two small volcanoes as known as the "twins" - Around 1:30PM we reach the last highest pass between the Andes and coast (4200M), everyone takes theirs mountain bikes and begin the last section of 2700M and 38KM of pure downhill biking on gravel road passing remote landscapes, cactus forest and finally after 2 hours arrive to the desert of El Pedregal (1500M) - After nice downhill biking we take our private car and drive for about 3 hours to your hotel in Arequipa and end of service around 6PM.

ADVICE FOR BIKERS

Normal physical conditions and summer clothes, bikers require good acclimatization over 2500M. One day before all the bikers will have meeting with the mountain bike guide at our office or in the hotel, who will give a BRIEFING about this bike trip and also you can check the quality of bikes and gear will be used on this trip.
