COLCA CANYON MOUNTAIN BIKING TOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1: AREQUIPA - PAMPAS CAÑAHUAS NATIONAL RESERVE - PATAPAMPA (4850m) DOWNHILL BIKING TO CHIVAY - YANQUE HOT SPRING
At 8AM we start our daily tour by shared tourist van or private 4WD vehicle (Private Service only) to the second deepest canyon in the world, driving on the left side of Chachani mountain (6070m), continue going up to 4400m, is a Natural Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, is the nature habitat for the Vicuñas, one of South American camelidos, groups of Llamas, Alpacas, small lagoons next to the road (Bofedales).
At 11AM arrival to the highest pass named Patapampa (4850m) from here you viewing nice mountainous range, death and active volcanoes such us Ampato, Coropuna, Ubinas and large extended of landscape. Briefing about the downhill mountain biking. Downhill biking on the nice serpentine payment road for beginners and for adventurous bikers this downhill offer many single track on 1300m of downhill. The mountain biking tours takes 2 hours viewing nice landscape through the small hills and springs.
At 1PM enter to the capital of Caylloma province, this town is named Chivay (3600m) and considerate the most important commercial town in all Colca canyon. Lunch at Chivay and then continue biking on le right bank of Colca River through pre-Incas terracing and local people working on their daily activities. After 2 hours more arrival to Yanque village (3400m) and visit the main church and a local museum running by local government where is possible to appreciate remains of the Collahua culture.
At 5PM short downhill to the Colca River where we visit the Hot Spring (45ºC) located next of the river. Plenty time to enjoy the thermal bath and then transfer to the hotel in Chivay. Stay in a nice and charm hotel - Room with private bath and hot shower available.
ALTERNATIVE VISIT COLCA PLANETARIUM FOR $10 USD PER PERSON:
At 7PM we invite you to immerse in the mysteries of the Colca Valley sky and enjoy the performance Colca deep Canyon, deep sky. You can learn how the ancient inhabitants of the Andes interpreted the night sky according to their myths and beliefs. The performances include projecting constellations in the Planetarium dome as well as observing the stars of Colca`s sky through a professional telescope – The visit to the planetarium can be arranged at booking time or few hours before the projection under coordination with your tour guide.
VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW
The visit to the planetarium is restricted for participants who choose to stay in hotels OUTSIDE Chivay, even if you book Backpacker or Private Service - The visit to the planetarium during the rainy season (December to April) is subject to changes of the weather conditions - PERU ADVENTURE TOURS is not responsible for weather changes or suspension of the event by the direct administration of the planetarium (Casa Andina Hotel - Chivay) - The payment made for the service of planetary will be refunded to each participant at the end of the tour/trek - We appreciate your understanding for any inconvenience that may arise.
DAY 2: YANQUE - COLCA CANYON - CRUZ DEL CONDOR VIEWPOINT - DOWNHILL TO MACA - CHIVAY - AREQUIPA
At 6AM is the breakfast and travel 2 hours on our touristic van to the famous Condor Cross viewpoint, at this place is possible to appreciate the fly of Condors or sometimes seating on the big rocks around the cliffs, two hours spending looking this amazing and biggest bird in the world, also viewing many villages at the deep part of this spectacular Canyon.
At 10AM we take again our mountain bikes and downhill on the dirt road along the right side of this canyon, this morning will cycle only 2 hours to Choquetico viewpoint and from there we take our touristic van to be transferred to Chivay and 2 hour stop to have lunch or for personal activities in this market place.
At 2PM time to return to Arequipa driving 4 hours on the same road used day before we arrival to your accommodation and end of trip.
OPTIONAL EVERY DAY SEMI PRIVATE BUS TRANSFER FROM CHIVAY TO PUNO $50 USD EACH
If you plan to continue your travel to Puno instead to return to Arequipa easily you can continue to Puno (lake Titicaca) taking additional semi private bus transfer for $50 USD each - We have depart at 1:15PM from Chivay and arrive to Puno around 7pm and you can be drop off in your hotel or main square of Puno - This semi private bus transfer includes 2 stops ONLY to use toilet but not to visit tourist attractions along the way - The tickets for the seats need to be purchased at booking time of this tour to Colca canyon - We cannot guarantee any last moment bookings if you want to find available seats from Chivay to Puno.

- Swimsuit (you can swim in the hot springs in Yanque or Chivay)

BEST TIME FOR CYCLE
After rain season (April to June) the mountains are completely covered with snow and the slops are cover with new vegetation making more nice for pictures.
ADVICE FOR BIKERS
Normal physical conditions and summer clothes, bikers require good acclimatization over 2500m. One day before all the bikers will have meeting with the mountain bike guide at our office or in the hotel, who will give a BRIEFING about this bike trip and also you can check the quality of bikes and gear will be used on this trip.
