The Colca Canyon is located on the southern Peru in the Andes mountain range exist the second deepest canyon in the world, It is more than twice as deep as the Apurimac Canyon (Peru) and the Grand Canyon in the United States, the canyon's walls are not as vertical as those of the Grand Canyon. The name COLCA refers to small holes in the cliffs in the valley and canyon. These holes were used in Inca and pre-Inca times to store food, such as potatoes and other Andean crops. They were also used as tombs for important people.
The geography of the Colca Canyon are habitable, and Inca and pre-Inca terraces are still cultivated along the less precipitous canyon walls; they build stepped terraces to cultivate the ancestral potatoes, maize and other products of this region. The Colca Valley is a wonderful and colorful Andean valley with many small and remotes towns on the both side of the Canyon founded by Spanish conquers. TOUR ITINERARY FROM AREQUIPA COLCA CANYON AND THEN TO PUNO

DAY 1: AREQUIPA - EL PEDREGAL - MIRADOR DEL AMPATO - HUAMBO - TREK IN CABANACONDE

At 7AM pick-up from your hotel and departure to the Colca canyon in our private car - Travel to see the rest of the north part of Desierto de Atacama located on the coast of Arequipa - The journey include nice drive through valley of Vitor, Alto Sihuas, El Pedregal and then drive on arid zone till the remains of Wary culture as known as Huacan ruins, this is located between the intersection of the coast and the andes - Drive on dirt road up to the highlands, getting spectacular views of small volcanoes range situated on Pampa Qerqe and then drive to get close to one of the most highest mountain as known as Ampato (6288M), where the mommy "Juanita" was found in 1995 (Ice maiden princess) - Stop at Mirador De Ampato, volcan Sabancaya (spitting ash) and Walka Walka snow peak to enjoy the panorama of the mountain around, small snack will be provided - Usually during the raining season (Dec to March) we can see lot pink Flamingos in the red lagoon accompanied by lot Vicuñas and other andean birds - Then downhill drive on a good gravel road to nice green valley named Huambo (3200M), located in very remote zone of the canyon surrounding by huge natural walls, we stop to share the lunch with local family (available vegetarian food) - This section of the trip offer great view of the deepest part of the canyon and luckily we will see the first flight of the Condors over the canyon - The journey continues up and down through agriculture fields with nice panorama of mountains, cactus forest and groups of Llamas and Alpacas grazing around.
Around 4PM we arrive to Cabanaconde (3280M) for check in at the hotel and late afternoon short trek for about 1 hour to Mirador de Achachigua (Optional), nice lookout of the Colca canyon and villages located on the bottom of the canyon. Stay in the best accommodation in Cabanaconde or transfer to another new accommodation as known as LA GRANJA (recommended), which is one of the best option to sleep in a room facing the deep of the canyon and maybe next day wake up with flight of the Condors - In both cases the rooms are equipped with private bath, hot shower, heat, window to see the see the mountain, wi-fi service and next day breakfast (L - D) - Today dinner is not included but the hotel offer restaurant service for additional cost.

DAY 2: CABANACONDE - MIRADOR CRUZ DEL CONDOR GEYSER TRIP - CHIVAY - PATAPAMPA 4910M - RESERVA NACIONAL SALINAS Y AGUADA BLANCA - IMATA - PUNO

At 6:30AM will be the country breakfast offered by the hotel - Luckily you will see the flight of the Condor from hotel LA GRANJA or transfer to trailhead and begin 1 hour of trekking along the canyon following nice and easy path with lot opportunity to watch the Condors flying over canyon, but also are available flights of giant hummingbirds, andean eagles, american kestrel, and other birds - Around 8:30AM arrive to MIRADOR CRUZ DEL CONDOR (3700M), and of course this place will be very busy thank to thousands tourist coming from the other side of the canyon, we just wait for reasonable time until you get the best photos of the Condor flights and them we leave this crowded place and start a nice trek along the canyon to enjoy different views of each corner, this trek takes around 1 hour in easy march - Around 10AM we will find the driver again and drive on a good paved road for about 20 minutes and then we take a gravel road up to 4370M of altitude where is located the GEYSER of Pinchollo, this fairly and rare natural phenomenon exist thanks to underground hydrogeological conditions that exist only in a few places in our planet and of course Walka Walka Mount (6025M) was an active volcano and thanks to that today we can appreciate a spring that discharges steam and hot water - Continue our private tour we return to the main road to stop and visit the standard viewpoint and villages on the right bank of Colca canyon, where is possible to see colonial churches, small handicraft markets, mountainous range and large area of agriculture terraces.
Around midday arrive to Chivay to have lunch (Optional - Excluded) and if time permit visit the hot spring of LA CALERA and enjoy the thermal pools for about 30 minutes - The will be the private transfer to Puno through active volcanoes and snow-capped along the way - The tour includes several stops at Mirador de Los Volccanes as known as Patapampa 4910M, this is the highest pass in all this trip and will be cold outside the car but very scenic view of mountains and activity of Sabancaya volcano - Stop at Reserva Nacional de Aguada Blanca y Salinas to see the local fauna as Vicuñas, Llamas, Alapacas, andeans brids in different wetlands - 2 more stops to use toilet and get some beverages and snacks - Short stop and walk into the rock forest of Imata, this places is great for people looking to take good photos of natural rock formation (humans, animals figures) located on the top of the hill - The last stop will be at Mirador de Lagunillas to enjoy large view of the lagoon and luckily we will find more pink Flamingos around the lake - Around 7PM drop-off at your hotel in Puno 3800M end of service (B).

COLCA GEYSER TRIP: The visit to the watch the Geyser activity will be available only:
1- During the dry season (April to Dec) and if the weather conditions is good only.
To get the GEYSER from the main road takes around 20 minutes on a gravel road - Three sections of the road are very steep and if is muddy will be not possible to continue driving up.
2- There is a small river to cross twice without bridge and if raining and the water damage the access the trip to geyser will be cancel without money refund or any claim.
3- The road to get the GEYSER is very narrow and is not suitable for large van over 6 people - As tour operator we recommend to hire a 4WD for better performance is case the road condition is not good enough for standard tourist transportations - Please check this point at booking time and avoid any troubles.
4- If the road is not good enough to reach the GEYSER with the car and customers still like see natural phenomenon could be possible but only according the distance to hike for 1 hour or more but you really need to coordinate the time with the guide and driver - Any tour delay after this decision will be under customer responsibility only.
5- If everything is perfect to get the GEYSER by car the maximum time to be there will be around 20 minutes.

April to June is the best season to visit Colca canyon, is complete new vegetation and mountains look covered with snow, new wildlife and less tourist in the most popular attraction.

ADVICE FOR TOURISM

If plan to visit Puno and then to do the Inca trail this tour is the best option for acclimatization. This tour doesn't require any camping gear as tent, sleeping bag or trekking boots. Drinking water you can buy in each town according the program. Before make photo of local people we strongly recommend to coordinate with your tour guide. If you like to give some present for kids we advise to bring pencils, toys and fresh fruits.
